DLP vs SLA Print Speed

April 18, 2017

Blog, DLP, G Printer

There has recently been an increase in the range of 3D printers available in the market. The most common being FDM printers, but nowadays there are more desktop DLP and SLA machines that are affordable. DLP and SLA share similar technologies, but they are different in the way that they solidify their prints. DLP has the same resolution as SLA but prints at a faster speed.   Both DLP and SLA use a light source (Ultraviolet light) as they solidify the resin in the VAT in multiple layers to create a 3D object. SLA prints with a single laser beam, similar to that of a pen that draws the path of the desired layer to create the 3D printed object. DLP uses a Slicing Program to turn the desired object into multiple layers similar to that of film and projects it into the resin layer by layer to create a solid object. The reason that DLP is much faster than SLA, is largely due to the way in which the objects are formed, even though the quality of both methods are very similar. One key advantage for DLP is that the width of the printed object doesn’t affect the…

The Fai Chun Season

What is a Fai Chun you might be asking? It is a traditional decoration for Chinese New Year that is used to create a fun and festive environment with common phrases, such as good luck and prosperity. These decorations are typically hand written to create a more personal atmosphere.   Youtube.com/MelissaChang                         travelsintranslation.comHowever, the younger generations are always looking to celebrate Chinese New Year in new ways whilst keeping the traditional elements of such decorations. Nowadays, Fai Chun’s are available in a wide variety. For example:   GiftCiti.com                As we were thinking about how we can be even more creative about Fai Chun this year on a sunny Saturday, we thought, why not apply the mass customization capabilities of 3D printing to make our own personally designed Fai Chun? And so we did! Unlike the traditional paper Fai Chun, the 3D printed ones are not easily damaged. They are relatively much more waterproof and can be put away and reused in the next season. The best part about it is that now you can mix and match new phrases anytime. Like our ideas? Shoot us a message to get a set for your…

Christmas Gift with 3D Printing

December 22, 2016

One distinct yearly issue that we all go through is when it comes to special occasions, countless hours are spent on looking for an appropriate present for our loved ones. In an attempt to create more personalized gifts, I chose a more creative option to 3D print my own presents. Thingiverse and Myminifactory offer some pre-existing designs and files to print. This process took some time but the effort spent on the computer searching for suitable presents felt more worth while than going out store to store. After choosing to print a Santa with his sleigh and reindeers, I was so happy that the whole 3DF team all helped me in the process of making the perfect gift. The first step was to download the files in its .stl format. I had technical help from Jacky-our Principle Consultant, to look over the file to ensure its printability and appropriate size dimensions. In this case, red was the only spare filament I had. Therefore we all collectively decided to print all the parts in red and to use a post processing method to change the colors of particular pieces. Once all the pieces were printed, Adrian proceeded with cleaning up the…

The Birth of 3DF

November 21, 2016

Uncategorized

A digital fabrication consultancy called 3D Forge was a wild ride while it lasted for many of us who are now part of 3DF. We had a wonderful time serving all of our customers and had big plans for our small, yet powerful organization. We are also infinitely appreciative of all of those customers who have been such strong supporters of us over the past 3 years. Unfortunately, like all businesses, things don’t always go the way we want and it’s very easy to get off track with the many externalities that affect a business every day. As such, with a heavy heart, on October 31st, 2016, we made the difficult decision to put an end to a company that I was part of building since 2013. However, that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. In fact, as I have often told many of my peers, “the ending of something often times translates to a beautiful new beginning of something even greater.” And so it was; the beautiful beginning of 3DF, the formation of a brand new entity with most of the same wonderful people picking back up the baton and continuing to pursue their passion. However, this…
